Logging From Your Applications

I get asked a lot by developers and sysadmins how they should write their log messages and how they should configure their applications to log. They feel that often they miss to log at the right moment and when a log is actually generated, it seems to always miss some information that is important. Especially when utilizing existing applications like Apache, there are a number of things you should know about.

This short presentation is the summary of a longer paper that I wrote. It guides you through the issues of logging in the cloud and presents some answers to ,‘what to log’, ‘how to log’ and ‘when to log’. Here is a quick summary of the presentation also:

• Problems with application logging in the cloud (I call it problems related to computer forensics, but they are really general problems)
• How are logs in the cloud different to your normal infrastructure logs
• Logging guidelines about ‘When to log’ (under what circumstances), ‘What to log’ (what information does a log record have to contain), and ‘How to log’ (how do you format your log record when you actually send it)
• Logging Architecture issues that you should be aware of
